Policy Statement on Environmental Rule of Law (July 2025)

The American College of Environmental Lawyers is a professional association that brings together lawyers who are distinguished by their experience and high standing in the practice of environmental law. College members are dedicated to maintaining and improving those environmental standards, ensuring the administration of justice and the ethics of our profession, and contributing to the development of environmental law.

As environmental law practitioners advising our clients and scholars informing the public about recent impactful changes and proposed amendments to environmental regulations and practices, our members remain committed to supporting:

(1) adherence to existing environmental statutes and regulations until modified by court ruling, legislative action, or lawfully established administrative procedures,

(2) the unbiased administration of environmental statutes and regulations by political appointees in respectful collaboration with technically competent and experienced career
professionals; and

(3) the role of an independent judiciary in reviewing federal, state, tribal, and local
environmental decisions.

This Policy reflects ACOEL’s unwavering commitment to the rule of law as a foundation of environmental law and environmental protection. The College opposes any efforts contrary to these three pillars of environmental law.

This Policy reflects the position solely of the College in its institutional role. It does not ascribe this position to any individual Fellow, their employers, their clients, or any other entity or person.
